Nexus (Investigations)
Nexus is a workspace for building out longer-running investigations — cases that span multiple RMS cases, people, vehicles, and locations rather than living inside one incident. A single RMS case documents one incident from start to finish. An investigation is different: it's where a detective pulls together everything relevant across many cases and records — a pattern across several burglaries, a trafficking ring, anything that doesn't fit inside one report — into a single place to work from.
Getting access
Nexus is reachable once your community has enabled the Nexus plugin and you hold the investigator permission. If you don't see it in your navigation, check with your admin — see Setting Up Your Community and Marketplace & Plugins.
Dashboard
Opening Nexus lands you on the dashboard, split into:
- My Assigned — investigations you're personally assigned to.
- Open — every open investigation you have access to.
Click + New Investigation to start one. You'll set a title, the owning department, and a classification:

|---|---|
| Normal | Visible to anyone with investigator access, same as any other investigation. |
| Restricted | Access is limited beyond ordinary investigator permissions. |
| Confidential | The tightest tier — access is limited to those who specifically need it. |
Pick the classification honestly at creation time. It's easy to lock an investigation down further later; loosening one after sensitive material has already been added is the situation you want to avoid.

Opening an investigation puts you into its workspace, organized into tabs.
Overview
The investigation's summary details — title, department, classification, status, and whatever else identifies it at a glance.
Linked Cases
Attach existing RMS cases to the investigation, or detach ones that no longer belong. Linking a case pulls its people, vehicles, and locations into the investigation's context — you don't need to re-enter anything a linked case already has on file.
Persons / Vehicles / Addresses of Interest
Every person, vehicle, or address relevant to the investigation lives here, each carrying a role specific to this investigation — a person might be a suspect in one investigation and a witness in another, and Nexus tracks that per investigation rather than treating it as a fixed label on the record itself.
Relationships
An interactive graph connecting everything tied to the investigation. It's seeded automatically from whatever you've already linked — cases, people, vehicles, addresses — and you can build it out further by hand, drawing connections the automatic seeding wouldn't know to make.
Nexus also runs a suggestion queue alongside the graph: as it notices shared entities across your linked cases (the same phone number, the same associate, the same address turning up more than once), it proposes a relationship rather than adding it for you.
Review the suggestion queue regularly on an active investigation. Confirm what's correct and dismiss what isn't — nothing from the queue reaches the graph on its own.
Evidence
Evidence that belongs to the investigation as a whole — as distinct from evidence attached to one specific linked case. Use this tab for anything that ties the broader investigation together rather than any single incident inside it.
Notes / Tasks
Free-form working notes for the investigation, plus a task list for tracking what still needs doing and who's doing it.
Working across investigations
Two tools sit outside any single investigation, for the moments you're not yet sure which investigation something belongs to:
- Global graph browser — a standalone version of the relationships graph that spans every investigation you have access to, rather than just one.
- Cross-investigation evidence search — search evidence across all of your investigations at once instead of opening them one at a time.
Restricted and Confidential investigations
Opening a Restricted or Confidential investigation shows a handling-rules banner at the top of the workspace so it's never ambiguous what you're looking at.
Restricted and Confidential aren't just labels — access to these investigations is limited beyond ordinary investigator permissions. Don't assume a colleague with investigator access can see one just because they can see your other investigations.
